Sijo Adriano Directo Emperado
Founder of Kajukenbo
Sijo Adriano Directo Emperado (1926–2009) was one of the greatest pioneers of 20th-century martial arts, best known as the creator of Kajukenbo - a versatile self-defense system that combines elements of karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, kenpo, and boxing. His vision and determination led to the creation not only of a unique fighting style but also of a global organization aimed at developing, promoting, and protecting the heritage of Kajukenbo.
The Origin of Kajukenbo
Kajukenbo was developed in the 1940s in Hawaii as a response to the growing need for effective self-defense in uncertain times. Emperado, along with four other martial arts masters, combined the best elements of various fighting systems to create a style characterized by flexibility, effectiveness, and adaptation to real-life situations. Kajukenbo quickly gained popularity due to its practicality and philosophy of continuous development and adaptation.
Kajukenbo as an Organization
Over time, Kajukenbo evolved from a local fighting system into a global movement encompassing schools around the world. Sijo Adriano Emperado not only solidified Kajukenbo's position as one of the most esteemed fighting styles but also established organizational frameworks that ensured uniform training and high standards among practitioners.
In 1958, Sijo founded the Kajukenbo Self-Defense Institute (KSDI), which became the official organization responsible for the development and oversight of Kajukenbo schools. The KSDI became the foundation upon which the system's international expansion and continuous evolution were built.
Establishment of The Board of Advisors
To ensure that Kajukenbo would continue according to his vision, Sijo Adriano Emperado established The Board of Advisors (BOA) in 2009. This advisory council's main task was to promote, certify, and maintain high standards among Kajukenbo masters. The BOA was set up as the body responsible for overseeing promotions to the highest ranks, such as the eighth and ninth dan.
The BOA was intended to include masters representing all the main families of Kajukenbo, reflecting the system's multifaceted nature and the pursuit of unity in diversity. Membership in the BOA was regarded as the highest honor, symbolizing years of dedication, martial arts excellence, and a deep understanding of Kajukenbo philosophy.
The Legacy of Sijo Emperado
After Sijo Emperado's passing, his vision and principles continue through the collaboration between the KSDI and the BOA. Both institutions work closely to support future generations of Kajukenbo practitioners and to develop their skills in the spirit of tradition and innovation.
The BOA continually evolves but remains faithful to Sijo's guidelines - maintaining the highest standards and promoting masters who embody the essence of Kajukenbo. Sijo Emperado's legacy is not just a fighting system but also a global community founded on the values of unity, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Thanks to the work of Sijo Adriano Emperado and the dedication of the BOA, Kajukenbo remains one of the most influential fighting styles in the world. Its legacy lives on in every student and master who continues this unique tradition.
